If you haven't already heard, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP on April 8 2014.
What does this mean to me?
For those that continue to use Windows XP beyond this date, your computer will still work however there may be an increased risk of security problems such as viruses, malware, spyware etc. You may also find that many software / hardware vendors will also stop supporting Windows XP which means that new software: applications, games etc, or hardware: graphics cards, printers etc may no longer be compatible with Windows XP.
What should I do?
We strongly recommend you move up to either Windows 7 (or Windows 8). Windows XP is only going to become more difficult to support and if you don't move up now there may be bigger issues to address down the line.
You can test whether your current computer will support Windows 7 by using the Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor,
Generally if your machine is capable or running Windows 7, it can also run Windows 8 however there may be some compatibility issues with applications you're running so you may also need to upgrade those.
Which operating system is best for me?
So this is a little tricky. If you're going to buy a new machine then the decision has probably been made for you, as most new machines ship with Windows 8 as standard.
If however your looking to upgrade an existing machine it comes down to personal preference, but you might want to consider a few things.
Windows 7 is a lot closer to XP, in terms of look and feel, than Windows 8 and it may be an easier transition if you're not using a touch device (like a tablet).
- Windows 8 introduces the metro interface which, is geared to touch devices and, can be frustrating.
- Windows 8 Is a big departure from Windows XP and, good or bad, it will fundamentally change the way in which you interact with your computer.
Personally, I am not a big fan of touch devices from a productivity perspective, so unless you have a desperate calling to the touch-path, I would recommend you stick with Windows 7 (if you can get your hands on a copy).
Can you help me?
Absolutely. Whichever path you choose we can assist you with backing up your data and migrating to your new Operating System(OS), and we even offer training to get you up and running. If you're in the market for a new PC we can build one for you, with your choice of OS, and assist you in migrating your data.
Addendum: There have also been a few alarming reports in the past few days that Microsoft may be looking to cut it's losses with Windows 8. I am not sure how credible these reports are however, I do have a concern on the uptake of Windows 8 as it seems to be taking its time being accepted in the mainstream. I hope it doesn't turn out to be another Windows Vista.
